I have been homeschooling my son the last 3 years using online digital academis through our public school system. Im not happy with the results.
How would I go about doing a better job on my own? I see that most of the companies, you can buy the curriculum w/o support from the school themselves....at a fraction of the price of involving them.
Any advice? I have a 9th and 5th grader. Thanks so much!

Hi have you considered using the BJU Homesat? this is what we used with my oldest who graduated in 2005 and my daughter from K-2nd she wanted to work more on her own than have the online teacher teaching her she is advanced and was getting board and trying to do her work faster than the teacher LOL
I know that they are now making it available on DVD instead of doing the satellite where you have to buy the dish and then pre-record a weeks work of classes in advance. I am going to consider doing the dvd's with my two younger boys because I loved the reading program the K-1 classes so much fun with puppets etc...
When we stopped using the above I started to purchase the BJU books some without the TE and just let her work out of them.
We are now using Switched on School house which is all on CD-Rom this program grades everything for you keeps records and gives progress reports a feature my husbands loves. So far she has been doing well she will be going into the 6th grade next session. You can control the grading scale, quizzes and tests.
Hope this helps some

Hi - We've homeschooled 18 years now. (*Our oldest is turning 24 and is now teaching first grade in a public school system!) As you can imagine, we've used ALL manner of curriculum. I'm proof that you can sometimes do all things WRONG and things still turn out right! ha!
As our lives grew busier, our need for a simpler curriculum became stronger so this year we also changed to the Switched On Schoolhouse computer program. Our children love it! My husband likes the fact we have more accountability! We've been so pleased that I've also become a distributor for them.
My one word of advise would be - TAKE TIME to walk through the tutorials on the teacher's section! They can save you time and frustration, if you do so. I believe we're allowed to put them on sale periodically, and I believe I have one day in January I can do that. I'll check on it. Anyway, best wishes towards your homeschooling success this year! Hang in there! If I can help you in any way, please feel free to contact me at cindy@my-favoritethings.com.
